Valve’s Limited Edition shell is probably a lot higher quality than those shells. A Valve engineer even stated, in the Tested interview, that it wasn’t easy to do it right way and they mentioned the material choice for it and how they had to consider many aspects. I doubt any of these low-cost replacement shells have any serious engineering in their other than ensuring they fit the hardware.
Moddable:
- Transparent shell is about $35
- 1TB NVME SSD upgrade is $100 (lower if you can find the ATL)
Important Notes:
- Shell Replacement has been reported to take approximately 4 hours
- NVME SSD Replacement is approximately 15 minutes
Not Moddable:
- New OLED Screen
- Upgraded Fan
- 60hz-90 Hz screen
- Change in APU
- Change in Bluetooth/Wifi Radio
- Change in Battery
Cost:
- Steam Deck OLED 512 GB: $549.00
- Steam Deck OLED 1TB: $649.00 ($100.00 Upgrade to 1 TB Capacity)
- Steam Deck OLED 1TB (LE): $679.00 ($130.00 Upgrade to 1 TB Capacity & Transparent Shell)
Analysis:
- Steam Deck OLED Limited Edition:
- Great value if you want the transparent shell and don’t want to commit 4 hours of your life to installing it
- Steam Deck OLED 1 TB Edition:
- Good value if you need 1 TB storage (Fair price upgrade for what you’re paying)
- Steam Deck OLED 512 GB Edition:
- Great value if you only need 512GB OR Are looking to upgrade to 2TB NVME storage anyways.
