I’ve had mine for over a year with “out of the box” settings. Played loads of games and have never felt the need to install amy extra tools/utilities. My only advice would be to consult protondb.com if looking at any non-verified games. It will let you know if there are any issues to be aware of or any extra fiddling needed to get a game to work
