Hi all? I want to play Path of Exile with a keyboard and mouse on my steamdeck and was wondering if I would experience a significant performance loss when playing the game in desktop mode for any reason? I know that the steamdeck OS is optimized to play games in it’s console mode, but how can I ensure that I can get the same amount of performance from the deck in desktop mode while playing these types of RPG games?

Also, just out of curiosity, is the proton bridge something that steam developed FOR the steamdeck? I can actually run Path of Exile very easily on linux just by toggling the Beta Proton feature, although it runs HORRIBLY on my machine (it’s not optimized for gaming, its just an i5 CPU). I’d like to learn more about how steam is deciding to go forward defining their games under a linux OS, as I’m a die hard linux evangelist and will perish before I go back to windows, LOL!

Is there actually measure able performance loss between the two modes? I always thought gaming mode was just a type of big picture mode

Performance loss is actually possible in gaming mode or desktop mode

I forgot what it’s called but it’s due to one using Wayland while the other uses x11

This doesn’t happen with everything though, it’s also possible one has better performance too

I wonder if the more annoying issue you’d run into would be a frame-pacing issue due to VRR not being perfect yet for external displays and not having an easy way to adjust frame rate and refresh rate manually in desktop mode. Unless my info is outdated.
