Valeo conducted a forensic audit of its computer systems and found that in April 2021, Moniruzzaman copied “the entirety of Valeo’s parking and driving assistance source code from his Valeo computer to a personal computer,” the lawsuit claimed.
Included were tens of thousands of files, large amounts of proprietary code, and “scores of Valeo Word documents, PowerPoint presentations, PDF files, and Excel spreadsheets explaining various aspects of the technology to further facilitate his understanding of the stolen code,” the lawsuit alleged.
How fucking stupid do you have to be to not only steal all of that, but then accidentally screen share the folder of the files you stole with the people you stole the files from?

So this is what that French raid must have been a few weeks ago.
Nvidia has had much more functional autonomous driving software/hardware since ~2015, and built Tesla’s early self driving / parking assist. This ex-Valeo employee was hired by Nvidia in 2021 when Nvidia’s DRIVE was already powering/developing Mercedes/others autonomous driving packages. Yes, Nvidia DRIVE uses ultrasonics as part of its sensor data (like Valeo park assist uses), but that’s been present in DRIVE (and other competing solutions) long before this guy was hired. Since Nvidia is mostly focused on optical processing now, I’d be surprised if they cared about anything the ex-Valeo guy might have stolen.
This sounds to me like an idiot (the ex Valeo employee) trying to make himself valuable to his new employer (Nvidia) via shortcuts, getting caught by his previous employer, and Valeo hoping to get a pretty settlement from Nvidia for some easy revenue.

Slightly off, Tesla was using Mobileye up until 2016 and then Mobileye infamously dumped Tesla due to them wanting to push past safety concerns. Nvidia’s PX2 was picked up from late 2016 to late 2018 and then Tesla transitioned to their custom hardware.
I doubt police are going to raid a company for a civil lawsuit over IP infringement. Whatever the raid is for I bet it’s more significant than this.
If that is true than this lesson about contract privity from yesterday is actually helpful. If this individual leaked the info to Nvidia, then only he would be in trouble legally. Because the contract only bound the employee to Valeo. I suppose french privity laws could be different but that should be how it works in america.
nVidia aren’t entitled to copy Valeo’s IP. That isn’t an obligation placed upon them by the contract, it’s simply how IP law works. Contract privity isn’t particularly relevant here.
Whaa, Nvidia profiting from unethical business practices? I’m shocked, amazed, and downright dumbfounded, I tell you!

A guy who was hired by Nvidia in 2021 stole a lot of code and documents from his former employer. He was caught in late 2022. His former company are now suing Nvidia in the hope of a big pay out.
There’s nothing in the article that suggests anyone other than the one employee did anything wrong.

This just smells like an excuse or even a “setup” to sue Nvidia. Would Nvidia really need to care about their parking software? This seems like small fries, and something out of the scope of Nvidia’s interests. Someone just looking to get a piece of the pie.
Nvidia has a pretty decent sized internal team for self driving vehicle software.
They might not have been going out of their way to steal secrets (this employee was probably trying to make himself seem better), but they definitely have the usecase for it all
NVIDIA are no saints.
The simpler possibility of them actually stealing secrets is far more likely.
Price of cards to climb to settle lawsuit
Not only is using others’ code now in vogue (I took a class maybe 5 years ago and they basically said scan the web and find code to copy, when I asked then how are we learning I was told that’s how it’s done. I quit and taught myself). Stealing IP is the Silicon Valley way. Many companies started by stealing IP but no one knew or those who did know, were complicit so stayed silent. It’s really unethical, illegal and they should pay a price for it. Even years or decades later. This case is boldface theft as are most.
