I love the idea that the I can hand write my ideas then convert it to text. I understand it’s a notebook, but it seems in the countless reviews I’ve read no one is using it for long form writing. Because I’m on the computer all day, I’d love a tool that doesn’t hurt my eyes. Thoughts on if it’s a good fit? Thanks 😊
I have both a ReMarkable and a Boox tablet. I like handwriting on the ReMarkable, but I like working on the Boox for actual writing/typing my novels. I have sensitive eyes and eink is great on both, but I do like the warm backlight on the Boox. ReMarkable is lacking a backlight. Still, I love and use both devices daily, just in different ways. I lean on my Boox more for novel writing though.
I love writing on the ReMarkable. I am not a writer. I enjoy writing my journal and/or taking notes by hand. I have written pages for my journal with the RM2 and I love the experience.
So I have literally had my remarkable for 4 weeks and I’ve achieved about 40k words on it for my novel. All of it is absolute trash but I decided to do NaNo to get words out for this book and it’s done wonders.
I newer wrote better than on a Remarkable with a Type folio. It’s awesome.
When the remarkable is attached to the typefolio and ready to type on, can you also draw on the screen while the remarkable is being supported by the typefolio backrest? Or is the backrest not strong enough to hold the tablet up if you pressed the marker against it?

Yes, I’m using it to write a novella - it’s great for long form writing! <3 It’s been a lovely experience - completely distraction-free, the tactile feel of the reMarkable pencil on the tablet truly feels like pencil on paper - its such a luxurious experience!
I got it after being in a years-long writing slump. I hated writing for “fun” on a computer after being on a computer all day at work, so drafting felt like work and had stopped being fun… After the reMarkable though, writing is so much fun again!!!

If you can find one on Ebay, AlphaSmarts are like the Freewrite and waaaayyyy cheaper. All you can do on them is type. You can only see a few lines of your text at a time, so the impulse to edit as you write is reduced. They run on AAs, and you send the text to your computer via a cable. I bought my Remarkable for the primary reason of writing. For so long I’ve been searching for a bare-bones e-ink “typewriter” without features that might distract me. There are some on the market, but the UI or design of the devices have been pretty awful. Then I saw Remarkable release the Type Folio and pounced.
It’s been a godsend. The keyboard is nice to write on, the UI is simple and clean. I would thoroughly recommend it for writing, especially if, like me, you have ADHD.
My only gripe is that it doesn’t currently have a Serif font which I prefer to use for writing, but I imagine that’ll come at some point in an upcoming update.
I also don’t mind the fact that it isn’t instantly available on Google Docs or anything, as I bought it with the sole intention of it simply being a drafting platform. Every time I finish a chunk of writing I’ll simply open the Remarkable app on my laptop and copy and paste the work into my working file (I currently use the Ulysses app).
