I have to download a massive shader update every other day for cyberpunk. Anybody else got the same problem?
That’s probably no download… look at your cpu usage while it’s happening. 😂
I had that with new world, had to let it go didn’t how to stop it
New world was both shader cache and game content almost every day. And the way they did game updates it was like 15gb + every other day worth of downloads, and nearly replaced the entire install when unpacked. I also had the game on my desktop and had to pause updates when not playing the game often because it would take up the CPU a ton when unpacking the massive updates in the middle of the day.
I used to have pretty much constant shader updates until I changed the automatic update time range to somewhere out of the way (like 6-7AM), and I haven’t seen anywhere near as many of them even when I look manually in the downloads menu, so might be worth a try if you haven’t already.
Doesn’t the device have to be on though? I put mine to sleep and every time I wake it up, it has shader cache updates for roughly 3-5 games and I have to wait 15-20 mins unless I manually cancel each update. Especially because I don’t have a chance to play every day, I’m usually only able to jump on once a week.
Actually I’m not sure if disabling auto update completely would have the same effect as limiting the auto update time, but the point is to NOT have Steam automatically update because that’s the broken bit as far as shader cache updates go for whatever reason.
At least, that’s what I think the problem is, I’ve never actually tried letting it actually run automatic updates by itself anymore lol.
I always have to laugh about linux people when they mention Windows Updates is what makes them not use Windows on Deck.
Reality is:
- Windows updates are downloaded in background. About once a month. And they only bother you when you shut down your device (it will then show “update and shutdown” besides the normal “shutdown”)
- On the steam deck you literally can update 5 times a day
- Shader updates
- Decky Load updates
- Desktop mode app updates
- Its absolutely ludicrous how many updates the deck has all the fricking time. You NEVER feel “up to date”. You constantly get shader updates, app updates, etc.
- Its like a constant stream of updates that trickle to your device 24/7
And dont get me wrong. Getting updates is nice. And it rarely bothers me (especially when I want to play a game and it tells me it needs to update first).
But the linux shills claiming “Windows has annoying updates” seem to have never used Windows. And especially on the deck.
- With Windows on deck you dont get any shader update stuff. None. Never.
- With Windows 3rd party launchers can run in the background. Which means that they will also update the games in the background (just like steam does on SteamOS).
- This means if you start a game with a 3rd party launcher you DO NOT have to wait for an update of the game. It was already downloaded in the background.
- When steam (and therefore the SteamOS UI) gets updated - the device does not need to restart. With SteamOS it always does a full restart.
The whole update situation on deck is at the moment clearly better on the windows side.
MUCH fewer updates. More seemless updates.
I hope Valve can improve on that … its not a great experience to start your deck and immediately have 6 updates. Every fricking time you start the deck …
