twice now she’s dropped different phones, and both times a little crack turns into a big black splotch until it takes over and is unusable. i had iphones my whole life and they’ve never done this to me, even when the screen is so bad i get glass splinters. so why does this happen to her phones but not mine?

Black splotch means that the OLED layer has been breached and exposed to air and starts degrading fast.
iPhones were LCD until the 12s I think. Explains OP never experiencing that.
