I live in Norway, so I have to import the Steam Deck. It’s expensive, so I’m thinking about the 64GB version with an additional SD card for added space. Will this be fine, or will it be much slower than the mid level Deck with SSD?
I have half my storage on SD card and half my storage on my 1tb ssd and I don’t really notice any difference between the two.
I’ve got the 64gb model because like you I live in a country not supported by Steam. So I use the 64 and a few microSD cards: 512gb that has the big games and couple 256gb for indie titles. The majority of mine are non-Steam games, but I have had zero issues at all with storage.
I recommend the decky loader plug-in called ‘Storage Cleaner’. It lets you see the size of both compat data and shader cache, which I find is essential for 64gb users. You won’t be able to have a gigantic library of pre-installed games. No problem for me as I tend to play 3 or 4 at once, then delete and install a new gane.
You’ll have a ton of comments here saying how 64 won’t work, but I have played Witcher 3, Cyberpunk, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Elden Ring, Spider-Man, Death Stranding, Breath of The Wild via CEMU emulator and heaps more. These big AAA titles work perfectly fine. Now I’m focusing on indie titles (my beloved Dredge, Cult of The Lamb, Hades, Forgotten Anne), so it really works on any and all sorts.
Just keep it to having a few games installed at once. ALL my games have run off a microSD card. Not one has ever been on internal storage.
