Well TSMC having a substantial manufacturing footprint of leading edge nodes in the US would sure diminish any incentive the USA has to defend Taiwan if China invaded. Just speculation, but wouldn’t be surprised if that factored in. US labor laws are also a pain in the ass and given a large share (if not a majority) of the workers would be immigrants or foreign workers anyway, why bother putting it in the US?
Well, the labour cost and work culture are more favourable in Asia and Europe. So it makes sense. It’s too expensive to build and manage fabs in US. Margins will go down unless US government incentivise these fabs with massive tax cuts.
