Iam considering buying a Steam Deck OLED and I was curious about things like resolution and performance. Is the resolution enough ? Does the screen look sharp ? I know the PPI is high, but you are also holding it close to your face. Also I was wondering about the performance difference between ROG ALLY Z1 (not Extreme) and Steam Deck performance. Is the Z1 still faster than Steam Deck or is it the same ? I don’t have enough money to buy the Z1 Extreme. I know this subreddit is full of Steam Deck enthousiasts, but please be objective. Thanks.

The Z1 extreme is on sale in the US for 600 at Best Buy. The Z1 non extreme is on par or even slower than the steam deck so basically useless. Resolution and performance really depends on what games you want to play. The screen on the OLED is sharp and is right where the performance of the chip can provide. If your only gaming device is this and you plan to play games that need anti cheat like Call of Duty or Destiny you should go with the Z1 extreme ROG Ally. Otherwise if you have a good pc and plan to play games from your back log get the deck.

deck screen res looks great at 800p. coming from someone using iphone 14, macbook pro16 max and lg c1 oled tv daily. dont worry. where it falls behind the devices I mentioned is it’s color reproduction, contrast, backlight bleed. it is bad imo on the lcd model. if you get oled version, nothing to worry about.

performance isnt as z1 extreme unless you stay at or below 15 tpd where they are more or less on par. z1 non-extreme is generally considered not good enough and avoid if possible. handhelds arent raw power only. you want performance of z1 extreme at 25tpd? be ready to be plucked to power almost all the time. is that still handheld then? not for me
