OLED Limited Edition in my hands for a bit now and the first thing that suprised me is… the sd card swapability. I moved all my games to the SD card, moved the SD card from LCD to OLED deck, bam. all games ready to play on the OLED. No redownloading, woot!
I suppose I may be a putz and maybe this was dead obvious but just in case, knowing is half the battle.

Is there a downside for loading times etc using an SD card?
Thank you so much for the edit. I didn’t understand why so many people had no problems swapping, but my deck always wanted to format.
Portable storage is portable. Got it.
Why would that be surprising? Thats the point of an SD card.
Good to know. I brought my SD card with me to Thanksgiving out of state with a bunch of games loaded up. Coming Friday!
You’re telling me you noved an SD Card with Steam Deck files from one Steam Deck to another Steam Deck and it worked flawlessly? Holy shit
I just want to say that I feel you! I thought the same.
I also had this thought like “even if you install the games on SD card, thete should be at least some base files and folders that are still bound to the internal storage”.
This is probably because I’ve seen so many games I installed on Windows on the past had their files scattered around the drives. Installed on D:, but some files are still placed on C:, such as configs .dll’s or mods.
You may had the same thought on the back of your brain.I bet the SteamOS/Steam client devs stumbled upon this issue too in the past and trying to localize the installation folders as monolithic/one folder as possible. Or maybe I’m just overthinking it.
Good to hear. Thanks OP!
