Hey guys! I’m looking to get my first laptop (yeah, odd) that should last for like 4-5 years (at least) which would be when I finish my major. I’ll be doing BME most likely, but I’m considering mechanical or electrical so that means CAD software and MATLAB and such, plus some very very minor gaming as well as just media consumption and browsing (don’t forget programming that’s a must too!) I don’t have a requirement sheet from any college but feel free to recommend any specific specs. What I’m looking for is:

  1. Preferably upgradeable ram and (if possible) 2 SSD slots, if not one is fine so long as it’s upgradeable. I’m thinking 16GB 1 TB
  2. Good Linux compatibility since I’d like to dip my toes into it alongside dual booting with windows.
  3. Allegedly a dGPU is “a must” for CAD as a student, but I’ve seen plenty of people say otherwise since the work done on a laptop won’t be designing the newest SpaceX rocket, so I don’t really have a preference for GPU, it’s just be a plus for making some games playable.
  4. Good battery life and portability. Budget is less than 2K USD. I’m open to getting refurbished so long as they’re somehow certified since I believe otherwise it’s a coin toss. I have no brand preference but I’ve heard some bad stuff about Dell and HP. I’d like it to be on the newer side as well so it lasts longer. One minor inconvenience I have is DDR4 ram since apparently everything from two years ago has it and only raptor lake and 7000 AMD have almost mandatory DDR5. Is there really a substantial difference?
