Just got my Steam Deck OLED upgrade today!
While I’m overall very happy with it, I did notice something unexpected in the OLED display. There’s more color fringing than I expected, especially around white icons and text. It’s quite noticeable and makes all the white elements in the Steam UI look very “not white” and giving everything a subtly chromatic aberration look.
Is this just how OLEDs look (I don’t think I’ve used an OLED screen before) or is something unusual about my specific unit? Sadly I’ve already sold my LCD deck so I can’t compare.
I also took a look at my Deck LCD and did see that there is a little fringing on it as well, but because it didn’t show up as a solid red or green, I never noticed it. Plus all the black pixels are lit up on the LCD, so it kinda blends the outlines of white.
It’s quite distracting for me as well. Something I want to figure out is if it’s happening to normal units, or LE units only. I see mixed reports about it, which leads me to believe it might be a panel issue. Do you have an LE?
I’m on 1tb non-LE, confirmed its a samsung panel, also found a megathread comment mention their LE boe panel had fringing too. So its probably just an oled thing.
I just got my SD OLED 512gb and I can see it very easily and it is distracting. It’s still much better than the lcd overall but I think the reason we see it on the oled and not on the lcd is probably due to the low pixel density paired with oled. But I wonder if it’s the same on the switch oled cause I’ve never seen a switch in person. I think if you’re myopic like me and play without your glasses on and with the screen close to your face you’re more likely to notice it.
