High school student looking to buy a new laptop for college with this discounts this week. I don’t really know much about computers and stuff so I’m looking for all the help I can get! (if this isn’t the right sub for this please lmk too) I’m looking to use it for all four years (and beyond) so my parents don’t mind if the laptop’s a little bit expensive. I do want to keep it below 2K though. Some of my criteria if it helps:

  • Going into engineering so something can handle some chugging and larger programs (don’t exactly know how this translates in term of ram and cpu but I’m guessing high?)
  • High degree of customizability / easy to install systems and do the cmd thing I.e. not a Mac (from my personal experience but it may just be me not knowing how a Mac works)
  • A nice screen for watching movies!
  • Fancy LEDs not necessary, but would like a front facing camera if possible
  • A general benchmark for all the laptops I’ve had in the past: able to run modded Minecraft
  • I already have an iPad and pencil that I use to take notes. Open to hearing about the pros of integrated into an Apple system

Open to all suggestions! If there’s a particular model you like using please let me know and I can do some further research myself. Thank you!

Talk to your school and get a hardware requirements list. Also see about student discounts and such. Talk to professors about what they use. If its a all PC school for engineering your idea of using an Apple product may not fly well. You may also need to factor in Autocad, Solidworks, and whatever programs required for your major. Get the list of the program hardware requirements and go thru sellers and using their filter mode to flag what you need.

Front facing camera - are you asking for a web cam facing the user or needing something to record the professor and the lecture ?

General benchmark for your laptops are going to be your own work. We can suggest review sites such as Notebookcheck.net, ultrabookreviews.com.
