my friend is interested in getting a new laptop so that she can have a better gaming experience. She currently only has a 2018 Macbook Pro. I’m not sure what the difference is between 13th gen i5 and a 12h gen i7.

For laptop, go for i7 not only good for gaming, but it can handle years of new software with ease. The windows experience on a laptop with an i7 is similar to a good i5 desktop. This is for now. Fee years back the i7 laptop version was only slightly better than the i3 in desktops. Plus go for MSI, asus or gigabyte or alienware in laptops.
Alienware will be costly, but its way better built inside also.

In this case - the 12gen i7.Even better - not a laptop.
I’ve heard that the Lenovo is the best overall laptop, but that and the Gigabyte should have similar gaming performance
