Have the most expensive LCD model and received the most expensive, limited edition OLED model a few days ago. Other than a hiccup with the fans which required an RMA, I’ve been perfectly satisfied with the LCD model but decided to get the new OLED for shits and giggles and out of curiosity, because why the hell not?
Anyhow, overall, the difference isn’t enough to justify an upgrade unless the cash is entirely disposable for you. Black levels are better on the OLED, yes, but it also has a reddish tint to it compared to the LCD and images are also slightly less sharp. These differences don’t matter for shit in practice, but are noticeable if comparing them side-by-side. Given the negatives of the OLED, I consider the screen comparison to mostly be a wash. I don’t have a strong preference either way.
Obviously, the better battery life on the OLED is a big deal. Additionally, the trackpads just feel more responsive on the OLED, and for me it’s a significant difference. Those are the only real improvements that I’ve noticed of significance thus far.
I’ll be keeping both models but, unless you’re like me and just buying it to have it, you may be better off waiting to upgrade until there’s a much more substantial evolution available (e.g. Steam Deck 2).
Depends on what you can sell you used deck for. I got almost 500 for mine since it had custom shell, halleffect sensors, and a 1tb SSD.
So for me it was only about $200 to upgrade. Well worth it in my case.
It’s not like you got more money with the upgrades. I’m assuming you had to buy them in the first place
$200 plus whatever you paid for the upgrades.
Rationalization is a helluva drug.
Out of curiosity how is the OLED less sharp? Aren’t they both the same resolution? And can you tune the red down with the updated SteamOS color edit stuff they added recently?
The different subpixel layout between LCD and OLED could also potentially effect the sharpness , but I’ll have to wait and see.
Objectively less sharp, but I don’t give a fuck it’s perfect. I love mine
One thing that seems to be a lot better for me is using moonlight. Not only can I now run it at 90 fps, it does seem much smoother with less dips. Probably from the wifi 6 upgrade.
A 70” 4K TV is also technically less sharp than the LCD Deck.
Same situation for me, felt the exact same as you do about it.
