I’ve been wanting a brand new 12 inch macbook since my 2015 became slow and unreliable.
I will lose my marbles if the bodies are plastic. What else could they cut costs on?
lower resolution display? the return of 128 GB SSD? I would not hate a 1440x900 resolution 12’’ Mac. That would be more than adequate for office work while the $1000 MacBook Air would have a very obvious upgrade in the retina display for casual users.
M1 + 8 GB RAM surely
The super cheap iPad 10th Generation is really not junk. It does have a slower A14 chip compared to the M-Series in the Air 5 and iPad Pro but that’s good enough for running most iOS stuff. A largely iCloud reliant netbook style Mac would not be a bad thing I think.
These low budget Macs would mainly be aimed at casual users and students anyway who don’t need a lot of hardware (or even storage space). And I’m sure Apple would be happy to sell more iCloud subscriptions.
Having used the Chromebook environment for a number of years… yes it would. Online storage isn’t the answer.
Apple won’t ever go back to plastic because it wouldn’t look good for their environmental efforts and their 2030 goal.
If they want to look good for their environmental efforts they need to get away from aluminum. And stop with the (plastic) proprietary connectors and dongles crap. The concept that Apple has any concern for the environment beyond a buzzword marketing ploy is a joke.
100% recycled plastic wouldn’t look bad though…
Don’t give Apple ideas 😭
And besides, even the 12” MacBooks made in 2015, 2016 and 2017 were all made of aluminium, so I don’t think Apple can downgrade the materials back to plastic like the MacBooks from decades ago because MacBooks are seen as “premium devices”, and plastic is not a premium material.
I mean… the margins are obscene they could sell it for $800 and still be making a tidy profit.
They should definitely have more memory and storage for their current prices anyways!!
Can only install apps from the Apple App Store.
The Mac for you sounds like an m1 air. You can frequently get these for $700-750 new and they are fanless/thin like the og 12".
Apple won’t do a 12" again. While I loved it personally the majority did not, with the air 13" they don’t need to and it just fragments the lineup further.
As for a $700 new Mac, apple also won’t do this. Apple operates like a fashion brand, Apple won’t lower the value of the brand Mac to this low beyond what they ever have. If you went to an apple store looking a Mac at $700 they would have the perfect product for you, an iPad air with a keyboard.
While I loved it personally the majority did not
It was actually a hit, but it was the piss poor performance of the Intel M chips and the relentless butterfly switch problems that forced Apple to discontinue it. Everyone wants the smallest, cheapest, most basic Mac. From basic users to many IT professionals and all those hipster stores that use Mac based POS systems.
Just put in MagSafe but take out all usb c ports, no speakers (have to get a HomePod or AirPods for audio), no webcam (use iPhone for webcam), give it a 720p display and call it the best MacBook for students 64gb storage 6gb ram starting at $799 /s
$700 MacBooks won’t happen because Apple doesn’t want to compete at the lower end of the market. This story has been going around since Apple announced the M1 over 3 years ago. Look! Apple is producing its own chips! Cost savings mean we’ll get $700 MacBooks! It didn’t happen and they are more expensive than ever.
4GB of RAM, 64GB storage
