Does anyone have a good grasp on how powerful the device is? Can it essentially handle all games on steam? Do we think it might be able to run something like Squadron 42?

There’s so much information about this out there… no it cannot handle all games but it’ll handle a lot of games and not exclusively games on Steam.
For specific games you should explore YouTube, use the search bar in Reddit or check ProtonDB.
My rule of thumb is if it runs on a ps4 it runs on the deck
