The Debian based Linux distro in desktop mode is quite solid, easy to use as a daily driver OS.

The deck will only support aaa games in the next few years so long as Devs make dedicated steam deck settings for really intense games.

Using the deck with Baulders Gate 3 connected to a tv, it doesn’t look great. I generally cap newer aaa games at 30fps. Deathloop and Returnal simply push the system too far for smooth play imo.

This really depends on price and understanding that the deck won’t out perform the legion but Linux is extremely fast on it and more publishers are making dedicated steamdeck settings.

I have a desktop and a 64gb deck with a 1tb SD card and recently got a PS4 pro before the large price hike for their online service.

If portable is not your priority and you have a computer that runs your current game library right now, I’d just get an Xbox series S or X on sale and gamepass and then sell the Xbox when you are ready for a new pc.
