Hey guys! Is it safe to format a new sd card on the deck now? I’ve read a few things in here from last year saying sometimes it can brick them, has there been any updates which means I can do it now? Thanks guys!

If it doesn’t format or something goes wrong? It’s because the card is bad. The steam deck is a lot more critical of a format than Windows is. If there’s a problem with the format? There’s a problem with the card. And you’re lucky that valve caught it before you actually lost data on it lol

I bought a SanDisk 1 TB Extreme Plus card and my OLED deck would fail to format it. After reading many posts from over the past year, I formatted the card in my Nintendo Switch and then tried formatting it in the deck. That was successful. However, occasionally when I boot the deck it will tell me to format the card. The solution is to remove the card and reinsert it.

Since the deck recognizes that the card is in the slot, I don’t think it’s a hardware issue. I might try using the 512 GB card from my LCD deck to see if that makes a difference. That card has performed flawlessly in the LCD deck.
