I’ve tried to have my PS4 audio output to my AirPods but I can’t seem to get it to work, although I have no problem with eARC’ing the PS4 to the HomePods. Is this possible? If so, what about using the AirPods as a microphone?

Edit: For additional context when switching to the PS4 input with connected AirPods no audio plays at all. I have to return to the Apple TV and disconnect the AirPods manually (taking them off doesn’t appear to work). Also, I had to turn eARC back on (disabled by a recent update perhaps?) and now I can no longer control my volume while the ps4 is the selected input

Hardware:

  • Latest ATV (eARC on)
  • LG C2 (eARC on)
  • Latest AirPod Pros
  • HomePod Gen 2 x2
  • PS4

I’ve read that the Creative BT-W3 transmitter will connect to AirPods but I’ve yet to try it.

But short of getting a proper gaming headset, earbuds wired to the controller gives much better audio than the TV.

I know this isn’t what you asked but I have an LG C2 as well and you can connect the AirPods to the TV over Bluetooth for audio on the AirPods, I do it often and I think it works pretty well for my PS3, PS4 and 5

Thanks. Does this work for the mic? Also, does this provide Spatial Audio when done this way? If not, sadly I’d rather just use my HomePods

Well is that still the case when my audio is going from the PS4 to the ATV over wire and then to my AirPods?

Basically the HomePods are the default audio output source so whatever audio signal the TV is receiving from the TV will be sent to the HomePods.

With that being said, you can use AirPods & other wireless audio devices with an Apple TV but not with the PS4 & PS5.

Set your LG C2 TV to these settings:

          HDMI Input Audio Format: Bitstream

          Digital Sound Output: Pass Through

          HDMI eARC Support: On

Set the Apple TV to these settings:

          Change Format: Off

          Dolby Atmos: On

I just use some wired headphones plugged into the controller if I want to game quietly. Pretty dumb that Sony won’t allow BT audio devices directly on the PS.

Agreed! I was extremely surprised to see that this limitation still exists on the PS5/Xbox. If it wasn’t I’d buy one, but their loss. Hopefully cloud gaming is in Apple TVs future.
