Has anyone put together a list of games that advertise HDR support but it doesn’t work on Steam Deck, or just general test results? (including on OLED’s internal display and when LCD Deck is docked to an HDR display)
Here are games I’ve tested where HDR is offered but didn’t work on Steam Deck:
- Hogwarts Legacy
- Hitman
- Hitman 3 / World of Assassination
- The Division 2 (DX11 + DX12 modes)
- Redout Enhanced Edition (DX12 mode)
Typically the game fails to detect the display’s HDR capability, but in the case of Redout, enabling HDR in settings causes the screen to freeze until you disable it.
Fwiw, here are games I’ve tested and verified that HDR works correctly on Steam Deck OLED:
- Guardians of the Galaxy
- Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice
- Days Gone
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Talos Principle (requires manual .ini change, looks terrible)
Good thread. Has Valve said anything about these HDR issues. I wonder if game devs need to do something specific to make it work or if it’s more on the Proton / Linux side of things.
Maybe HDR sometimes works with certain Proton configs but not others as I’ve read people comment, but here are the HDR supported games I’ve tried so far:
HDR doesn’t work:
Shadow Warrior 2
Redout: Enhanced Edition
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
Shadow of the Tomb Raider
Nier Automata (This one was always odd on Windows as well, no menu option for HDR but supposedly has it but I’m not convinced it’s true HDR anywhere)
Final Fantasy VII Remake Integrade (I could enable it in the menu but it looks very off, a grey mess)
Devil May Cry 5HDR works:
Ori and the Will of the Wisps
Lies of P
Baldur’s gate 3
Hogwarts Legacy (You list this as didn’t work, but I’m 95% sure it was working when I tried it if I don’t misremember)
Lego Star Wars The Skywalker Saga (Not very impressive HDR though)
Elden Ring
Monster Hunter Rise
Doom EternalSome more:
HDR works:- Star Ocean Divine Force
- Monster Hunter World
- Horizon Zero Dawn
- Like a Dragon Gaiden: The man who erased his name
By works I define “turns on and colours are changed, and HDR mode of the screen turns on”. The results might vary though. For example SO:DF is very bleak and washed out. Highlights max out at 400 nits if I enable HDR overaly. The game has no ingame HDR settings, so it’s pretty awful.
My Hogwarts Legacy test was shortly after the game’s release (via docked external HDR display on SteamOS Preview) so the situation may have changed since then.
I’m not sure why Control is listed as HDR supported on Steam when it requires installing an unofficial patch. When I tried installing that patch, the game wouldn’t launch for me.
Right, I forgot that there was an unofficial patch for Control made by an employee, haven’t looked into that. I wonder why they just didn’t add it to the game though…
I checked Hogwarts again and HDR does work.
It’s a bit surprising that not much is being made of this issue outside of a couple of mentions on Reddit. As someone who is a bit obsessed with HDR on OLED I really wish the situation improves as if implemented well it makes a big difference. The best game so far for me is Lies of P which is just stunning in HDR and runs like a dream with Ori Will of the Wisps a close second.
Also tested myself, yes I can confirm Hogwarts Legacy HDR works now. Edited original post to reflect this.
Hdr works: Farcry 6 (good) Red dead redemption 2 (though can’t get it as good as my TV/ps5)
Hdr doesn’t work: Fallout new vegas, it detects it but doesn’t seem to work
Tony Hawk seems to have hdr in the menu, but it’s not selectable to turn it on for some reason.
