There’s not much of a difference, UM is for the US Minor Outlying Islands, territories under USA, such as Nantucket, Amelia Island etc. and US is for the mainland.

The minor islands flag is the same as the US flag. The distinction was created by ISO in the 1980’s for whatever reason.
