Looking at “Very Good” refurbished Macs and wondering what the consensus is on the following.

Option 1: 15" Mid 2015 Macbook Pro Retina - i7-4980 with dual graphics, 16GB RAM, and 512GB Storage. They are going for $400-450 or so.

Option 2: 13" 2020 M1 Macbook Air - M1 with 16GB RAM and 512GB Storage. They are going for $850-1100 or so.

Option 3: Open to other ideas.

Use Case: School and general daily use. Some Photo and Video Editing as well as digital art for school (ports on the 2015 MBP are nice). As well as email, general web browsing, remote classes, paperwork, etc.

M1 just for the battery life alone. When I was in school I would’ve killed for a laptop with m1/2/3 battery life. Outlet hunting constantly is a pain. And the m1 benches considerably higher vs the i7 4980. You’ll find it more then worth for that extra 4~500.

In most cases I would not buy a device that is already out of support. The 2015 MacBook has not been able to get updates for a while now. I think it is stuck at macOS 12 and the current version is 14. So the M1 Air would be my pick here for both security and longevity of the device.
