So I’m 14 and I’m going to go to high school next year. I have gone to a private school all my life and I would feel safer to have a phone with me in high school. I think Christmas would be a good time to do it. I don’t know what I want and I would be fine with just a phone. But my dad says I can’t have one until I’m 16 and my mom says the end of 8th grade. Im going to do band in high school and I will start practicing this summer. So I would want to have it for then also. Another reason I want to get one soon because of all the wars going on. My history teacher said it is very likely that World War 3 would start soon. I would like to have one just in case something like that were to happen. He said the economy might crash. Though he might be wrong. Is there any perks to an iPhone that would make them get me one? I’m sorry if this isnt the right place, I don’t really know where else to post this.
Absolutely 0 reason to have an iPhone… Be honest and just say you want to fit in with all the people in high school who won’t matter in 4 years when you leave high school… 😂 Wait until You’re 16 and get a part time job then buy an iPhone so you can get the clout you clearly are desperate for. Lol
Bud you don’t need it. Especially because of all the drama in the world. Your brain (just as most adults) can’t comprehend all the nonsense. People were simply not made to consume so much toxic BS. Relax. If you want a phone for communication purposes get a phone without internet or ask for an Apple Watch set up on one of your parents phones. I promise 25yo you will be thankful that 13/14yo you didn’t have a phone.
I would be fine with a watch. Maybe i could bring that up, I just want something to be able to contact my parents when I’m at school or at practices of some sort
I’m not going to patronize you like the other comments here, but I do want to warn you to be careful with the whole “World War 3 is coming and the economy will crash” stuff.
It’s easy to say the world is ending, and that’s why do many people say it, but in reality very very few of them are ever right. You’ll live a much happier life as an optimist, and you’ll be just as prepared for the worst (if not more) by simply living your best life without stressing over some hypothetical societal collapse.
Besides, on the topic of cell phones: the first thing likely to be disrupted in a large scale war is internet/cell phone service. If you really do want to choose to live in fear, what you want is a HAM Radio, not a cell phone.
Edit: I guess I never really answered the question. My opinion is that if you can get away with not having a cell phone, hold onto that as long as you can. Smartphones are cool and useful, but they have their drawbacks too, and once you have one, it’s very hard to go back. Not saying don’t get one, but realize that you’ve still got a whole lifetime to be tethered to it, so no rush.
Having to even throw in something like WW3 into the potential reasons shows there isn’t a strong argument for you to need one. Haha
Just take a simple button phone trust me ur gonna regret this decision soon it’s not worth it just remember there’s gonna be a point u will think that it was better when u used your parents phone
My sister is 12 and has had an iPhone so we can check her location. I got her the SE to start with.
I didn’t have a smart phone at 14…. You don’t need one either
I had one and in this day and age I think it makes a lot of sense for a kid to have one. You can check the calendar and classes, you can track homework if it’s online, you can message friends, read news, educated yourself.
It’s not only for fun and pleasure, a phone can be a valuable tool for learning too.
So the reasons you listed are:
- band practice
- world war 3
- economy crashing
I’m not a parent, but I don’t think these are strong enough reasons to skip over a dumb phone or even a basic burner android phone.
What would you hope to get out of your phone for band practice? Is it being able to contact your parents for transportation or letting them know where you are? Any phone can text or even call your parents. Do you want a device that can help you tune your instrument or be used as a metronome? This is a bit more compelling reason to help bump you up to a smartphone, but still an iPhone doesn’t seem necessary
Location tracking could be a more attractive reasoning to get an iPhone, but would you want your parents to be able to track you 24 / 7?
World War 3; if you learned about the past world wars, America entered the war later on (America entered WWI in 1917, it ended in 1918; America entered WWII in 1941, it ended in 1945). How would an iPhone help you in regards to WWIII? Why an iPhone over a dumb phone? Why an iPhone over an android phone?
The same questions can be applied to the economy crashing. How would you having iPhone affect you in regards to it? If you need to know when it happened, chances are you will hear about it either from the people around you or the media you currently consume.
Overall, I do not think this is a comprehensive argument to get an iPhone. You haven’t given reasons why a dumb phone would not fit your needs. You also haven’t given reasons why an android would not fit your needs. Your parents seem to be reasonable enough to give you a timeline of when to expect an iPhone, and as of right now, I don’t think your reasoning is quite there yet to convince them to push up that timeline
Nope
You need a phone with only texting and calls, an old Nokia brick.
