Yesterday I was flying from Charles de Galle (CDG) airport to Atlanta (ATL) and I then had another connection flight. I COMPLETELY forgot about it as toward the middle of the flight I started using the in-seat entertainment. Well I ran off the flight without looking back and now the steam deck lives somewhere else. I contacted the airline (Air France) but if you guys see a DBrand switch steam deck in the wild… it brought me a lot of good times.

RIP: Steam Deck

I’m blown away by how many posts like this I’ve seen. People just put it down in a public space and walk away (it gets stolen) or they leave it behind on an airplane. How is that even possible?! The thing is massive. Not to mention crazy expensive like… Don’t you know how to take care of your shit? Jesus. It’s wild. Absolutely wild the carelessness I read about on these types of posts regularly.

Also, the obligatory “sorry for your loss” so I don’t seem like a COMPLETE asshole. Right? That’s how that works…?

When I’m outside with my steam deck, my default state is that I’m expecting something to happen to it, so I’m always clutching it for dear life.

That being said, exceptional mistakes happen. Nobody comes here to post “I travelled to xyz and remembered to take my steam deck”

Some people are just accident prone ig. I make sure everything is in my bag whenever I get off a flight after I had a near miss forgetting my phone on a plane.

      “Crazy expensive” lol.

But for me If it’s not in my hands it’s in the case (won’t get broken). If I’m in public it’s in the case in the backpack. I can imagine leaving my deck on a plane, but I’d never actually do it. People don’t take care of their shit.

Ah yes, because people can be utterly perfect and not make careless mistakes at all right?

Shit happens even when you’re super careful and even with expensive stuff. Asking for how people can be careless is the equivalent of asking how people can get into car accidents or lose their wallets. No one is perfect, but you make it sound like people who lose these things are inherently sloppy. It’s not even as if this is a commonplace thing since the number of SDs lost is a miniscule percentage of the number of people who actually own it; people aren’t going to post “I still have my SD” topics after all, and naturally people posting these just need an outlet to vent.

You even acted like a jerk in your last sentence so yes, you do come off as a complete asshole. Work on your own issues before making unhelpful, snide remarks about others.

I fly 2-4 times a week with my deck. I have made a mental check list that I use to confirm I have everything that I brough with me.

My recommendation for anyone who doesn’t fly often is to carry a small notebook with a checklist to check every time you go somewhere. Visually check that you have everything on every trip.

      Leaving home? Check your list.

Just passed airport security? Check your list.

Your group was called to board? Don’t be in a rush, check your list.

Sitting down in the plane? Check your list.

Wheels touched down at your layover location? Stop what you’re doing as soon as the plane touches down! Check your list, put everything in your bag. Too many people wait until they’re getting off the plane to get their things together.

Repeat for the 2nd flight. Repeat after you get your checked baggage and when you get to the hotel or destination. I started doing this after I lost a tablet. Over the 18 years that I have been traveling for a living I have lost 1 tablet, 2 sets of earphones (1 was stolen) and a Nintendo Switch (stolen out of my bag at work).

      Safe travels.

I once left my notebook at security. They responded to my emails but ruled out any option besides me physically retrieving it. That would cost me more than a new laptop. So I had to let it go.

You guys actually set your deck down for extended periods of time? If it’s not in use I tuck it away. Slip it into my backpack and take backpack wherever I am going.

How you run off the flight? I’m always sitting or standing around 10 min waiting for people in front to get off.
