Does it even make sense to set the audio return channel to ON if nothing other than Apple TV is connected to the TV? Are there any advantages or disadvantages?

I can’t imagine a scenario where that would make sense. If you ever game or watch live tv, then yes. That said, when I have it enabled, my live tv picture gets messed up, and the sound cuts back to the tv audio and then back to the HomePods again so I leave it off unfortunately.
