I love my deck and I’m excited for the OLED model, but after using the ROG Ally for a few months it’s really hard to give up that VRR functionality…being able to turn off vsync does wonders for input delay (especially with emulation), and it makes having to worry about setting or meeting certain performance thresholds a non issue since it’ll always look smooth regardless of framerate (assuming you don’t drop below the minimum of course). It’s such a good feature for a device like this

I really want one, but man I’m kinda disappointed they didn’t go VRR

Agreed. I’d have really liked that. But I also really want OLED. The question is do I buy one now knowing there’s likely a new model in a couple of years. That would make my Steam Deck upgrade cycle rather frequent.

Eh. It would have been nice, but the higher the refresh rate the less VRR matters, because the vsync interval is more frequent anyway.

And as you’ve pointed out, usually VRR only works down to 40hz anyway, and you also need to apply a frame rate limiter to stop from exceeding the panel refresh.

Personally I’d say the bigger bummer is that the display is only 90Hz in the first place. The LCD screen can be overclocked to 70Hz so it’s really not that much better. 120Hz or even 144Hz would have been a much bigger improvement.

Input delay is something this subreddit don’t mention enough. The gamescope proton layer adds I put delay as well as turning on V Sync. As soon as you turn off V Sync many games have hitching.

Another issue I have with Deck is the D Pad position. It feels unnatural for 2D games especially fighting games. They should have had a smaller left touch pad and swapped the position of it with the D Pad location. These are the 2 main things that holds back the Deck for me
