I was crossing my fingers that I could grab a 64gb version for $359 on Black Friday. And instead, I got a $319 256gb deck today instead.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m super tempted to get the OLED but at 42% cheaper with more or less the exact same performance, I think I’m happier with this deal instead. I’ll be using it docked a lot of the time or curled up on the couch at home where battery isn’t an issue. I want to play a few AAA games (Elden Ring, GTA 6 once it’s out, etc) and I want an one-and-done emulation beast so I’ll be playing a lot of older games (that can’t hit 90hz) as well. So I think that saving a few hundred dollars is the move here, and that way I’ll feel more justified to buy the proper refresh in a few years.

Anybody else with me? Or do you think I’m an idiot for buying an LCD Steam Deck after the OLED announcement?

I think the best deal to be had is getting a new OG 64GB at the new price, and then swapping out the SSD and sticks for a 1TB SSD and Hall Effects but this has always been the best deal.

I imagine most people in this sub already have a Steam Deck, so of course the deals for pre-existing products will get less attention.

I bought a 512Gb refurbished yesterday. I’ve been eyeing the steam deck for the past month or so and was waiting for a Black Friday sale. After the price drop I had to do it.

And it’ll only get cheaper from here on out. Once the oled is out for a while you’ll see decks go for $150-200

That’ll be crazy to see considering they’re the same price (or higher for some reason) used as they are new on FB marketplace in my area

I had one briefly but am currently deckless until this new one comes in. You’re going to love it!

Just ordered a 512 GB refurbished this morning. When they first did the refurbished decks I was considering it, and by the time I made up my mind to get one, the refurbished ones were out of stock. Saw they were back last night but got busy, and when I checked this morning only the 512 GB refurbished were left so I went ahead and ordered one. Super excited!

I bought a used 512gb on eBay last month. If I would have known I would totally have gotten a refurb 512gb and saved $100. Oh well, I’m trying to be okay with it. What’s done is done.

It’s always hard to time technology purchases. The best option is always the one that does what you need to when you purchase. But I get it that the FOMO is real

I use my Deck docked nearly always, screen doesn’t matter given projector.
Fan noise can’t be heard over projector’s fan.
Battery life’s irrelevant as always full.

So yeah, great plan, and extra saved cash for future replacement in a few years.

I definitely understand your point, as I was also waiting for some deals or a cheap refurbished version to be available to finally buy it. However, the first time I watched an OLED panel some years ago, the game changed for me. It was mind blowing and ever since I’ve enjoyed too much the Switch OLED and my TVs to now step back from it. The screen was literally the only complaint I had about the Steam Deck, so now I’ll simply wait longer until the OLED version gets a discount or they start selling refurbished versions of those 😂

I broke down and bought a 64 yesterday morning. Saw the news and promptly cancelled the order. Saw the price for the 512 refurb and ordered. Then went to Amazon and cancelled the 512 SSD I ordered.

Not having to do surgery on your SD and getting the upgraded screen glass seems like a huge win to me

I personally went with the 256 GB refurb because I was worried that I wouldn’t like the etched glass. My concern was I would see people say the screen looked ‘oily’ or ‘blurry’ due to the way that the screen diffuses light.

I also went 256 GB so I could avoid taking the 64 GB apart and replacing it myself. I know it seems really easy, but I figured that I could spend $50 more on the 256 GB or buy the 64 GB and spend $100 extra on a 1 TB. I figure that 256 GB should be enough storage for me, especially if I get a 512 GB Micro SD which I would have gotten with any model. So I’ll save $50 by getting the 256 GB instead of a 64 GB with a drive swap.
