I am apart of dozens of steam deck groups on multiple platforms and before the refresh the general sentiment was

  1. High refresh rate panels are pointless because you cant see faster than 40 fps (which i KNOW is a lie)
  2. Oled was pointless due to burn in when oled tech improved years ago and you have to be an idiot to get burn in on most devices.
  3. These devices arent even strong enough to hold high framerates. Meanwhile the deck is adding a refresh rate it wont be able to sustain. I didnt see anything about a stronger chipset.

I didnt make this to say “dont be excited”. I want all of you guys to be excited about this refresh. I think its great. But i want some of you to recognize how tribal you have been and purposely negative about every other handheld in the space. Those dudes deserve to be excited. I dont want deck users to become apple users that can only appreciate features once theyre on their device of choice.

I’ve never heard any of these complaints.

Besides that, high refresh rate isn’t just about high framerates. 80hz + 40fps can now be used to replace 40hz + 40fps which means less input lag.

I’m not too active on this sub (I mostly lurk) but this is what I remember from each of those points.

    1. Never been a mainstream thing in the sub, and when someone brought it up it got dogpiled on.
    2. OLED burn in is a thing, but it was never a big topic here besides threads like “can I replace the deck screen by an OLED” or something like that. The convo about OLEDs being bad because of burn in wasn’t common. And whenever people complained about color, people tend to recommend the color/brightness on decky (can’t remember name right now). What has always been kinda often a topic of arguments was the regular vs etched glass vs screen protector messing up colors, but that’s another issue.
    3. Yes and no, it’s true that the deck cannot hold refresh rates higher than 60 for modern 3D games such as cyberpunk, elden ring, switch games on emulation, etc, and if anything often you will see people recommending capping the refresh rate at 30 or 40 for stability. But at the same time for older quick paced games (be it old shooters like CSGO), 2D games like hollow knight, super meat boy, etc, having the choice to go above 60FPS would be welcome.

Regarding my take on the SD oled, it’s fine, I wont buy a new SD because the LCD one is fine, I never bothered modding the SD because for me it’s fine as it is (256GB model, using an sd card), and won’t mod it unless something comes out that is a gamechanger for me, specially becasue swapping some parts is a hassle, but for the people who want it, go for it.
