For anyone who thinks that all electric boats are essentially just aquatic golf carts, well … think again. A Princeton University student team recently broke a world speed record for electric-powered boats, with an average speed of 114.2 mph (183.8 km/h).

Perhaps they should be focusing on the endurance record.

Just a reminder that the water speed record has historically been the most deadly of the speed records

You guys should see hobby grade electric model boats. Starters will do 60+, mid grade 80+, dual motor cats 100+, and this guy went 206

Thank you for the perspective! This really put it in perspective for me because I’ve seen those rc boats and thought “damn that’s fast” and then the guy driving it tells me it’s he’s cheapest one for like $120 he was going faster than bass boats in a 18 inch model. Mad respect for people who can control the really fast rc ones, let alone a full sized craft!

I was disappointed to find out that the name of the boat isn’t “Shocker.”

When I was a kid, my dad had a trolling motor that got our aluminum fishing boat up to 2, maybe 2.5 miles per hour.

So, the bar is pretty high.

Here is a link to an recent comment I made on a different post about the water speed record. It is a short YT documentary about the history of the water speed record. Fun watch.

Edit: This link links to the recent link to the YT video. I’m sorry you have to click twice to reach it.
