My specs:

  • CPU: 13th Gen Intel Core i5-1340P
  • RAM: 16GB
  • OS: Windows 11 Pro (Version 22H2)
  • Installed expansions: USB-C, HDMI, 2x USB

BIOS options:

  • VT-d: enabled
  • Intel (VMX) Virtualization Technology: enabled

Hey all, I’m a Belgian student and I’m currently in college studying System and Network Management. I have to use VMware Workstation 17 to run multiple VM’s including Windows 11, Linux Mint and Ubuntu (this is all for now but there will be more).

I want to turn on VT-x/EPT inside VMware so my VM’s can run as good as possible, I’ve posted here before about some issues regarding VM performance, this is now mostly fixed and they work just fine for what I need to do in class, but my curiosity wants more.

As seen above, I’ve enabled all the virtualization options in the bios (that I could find, I think I looked everywhere though) but it doesn’t work inside VMware Workstation. I’ve also installed Hyper-V and all its components. Every time I try to enable VT-x/EPT though, it spits out this error:

Error enabling Intel VT-x/EPT in VMware Workstation 17

I’ve looked up the specs of my processor and it supports this feature, yet I can’t seem to find the option to enable it or use it in any way. Anyone know how I could get it to work?

This is sound advice. Windows has its own hyper visor (Hyper-V), and available in Windows Pro. If you have Hyper-V enabled, you’re already using VT-x and the Windows session you’re in is already running on top of a virtualization layer, even if you don’t have any Hyper-V VMs.

Because of that, if you try to run VMWare Workstation, it won’t see VT-x enabled because it’s already running in a virtualized environment.
