My solution has been to run Windows/COD off a quality microSD card.
Game plays fine and no harm has come to my Steam Deck. Get a quality card with a lifetime warranty (SanDisk Extreme) and you’ll be fine. Probably buy TWO cards and image your daily driver card to the backup card periodically. Or image it and save it to your PC.
