A friend of mine told me that Intel laptops have a performance degradation issue. The overall speed and responsiveness decrease considerably over time. Did anyone here experience such an effect?

Yes it’s called thermal throttling, but it does not degrade and stay degraded.

Change of Thermal Interface Material, clean up of heatsink and general maintenance is required. TIM should be of higher viscosity than of those used on desktop CPU’s.

Laptops require higher viscosity thermal paste given that CPU/GPU reach 80C+ and stay there for some time, which in turn dries out or some pastes bleed out, expansion/constriction of heatsink.

Best TIM material for CPU/GPU is Honeywell PTM7950 phase change sheet. Difficult to handle so freeze before removing protective plastic sheet and application.

Best thermal paste for CPU/GPU: SYY157, Gelid GC Extreme, Phobya NanoGrease Extreme, Thermalright TFX, Coolermaster Mastergel Maker, Thermagic ZF-EX.

Best thermal putty for VRM/VRAM: CX-H1300, UPSIREN U6 PRO, Zezzio ZT-PY6, Jeyi 8100, LK-PRO, EVGA Putty, Penchem TH949-1, Jeyi 8100, Penchem TH855-5, TG-PP10, Penchem TH930, KPT-8, MG860, K5Pro (use only if no other thermal putty is available).

Edit: tell your friend maintenance is a must.

I thought about the same. I don’t know the laptop model. but it can be a model with inadequate cooling. contributing to the throttling. And I’ll tell my friend about maintenance.

      Thank you for replying ☺️

Not every laptop is built the same, and they are not desktop units with beefy coolers and fans.

One has to understand what their needs are, what is being offered, and finding the best balance. Laptops in general will always be hotter but there are ways to make them cooler to acceptable levels.

Some of that is provably the typical windows slowdown/degradation . A fresh install of windows with same apps will always be feel faster and more responsive then an old one. Also If you use a poor quality thermal material between integrated heat spreader and the cooler the performance drops as they age and dry out.

Yes its true due to dust build up. Keep your laptop clean, heatsinks free of dust and it should perform well.

Doesn’t happen to me, if we’re talking about after half a year, an entire year, or more than a year, then yes it will happen as it heats up you’ll degrade it. That’s normal for that to happen and you shouldn’t worry much about it, by then you’ll be upgrading components.

Laptops degrade performance because a lot of dist gets inside over time and blocks airflow from fan. If you clean the dust out it will be back as new

As others, say… it’s prolly due to temps increasing inside and throttling as a result.

I only ever took a laptop apart ONCE … as it took hours and was a total nightmare… but the amount of gunge around the fan/heat sink was disgusting.
