Do I absolutely need to attach that short cable to the Deck first? I plan on playing it hooked up to a tv with the Deck as the controller so you can imagine having that brick of a hub dangle alongside the Deck next to my hands wouldn’t be a good situation. I thought my only other option was to attach a usb-c to usb-c cable from the Deck to the hub’s usb-c port then attach the charger to the other port. Leaving the dangling cable from the hub unused. Any advice how to handle this situation?

You do need to attach it to the cable. Barring buying a different hub (like this one), I would just get an extension cable. Pair it with a 180 degree adapter and you’ll have minimal stress on the port.
