I would use heroic. It’s well supported and fairly seamless. Takes some time to understand and some games might give you trouble at times, but I think it’s great.

Every one I’ve tried no. They run worse, or with some sacrifices. Running games with native pc ports through Switch emulation isn’t the way to go.
Wanting to use it with game pass is probably the best reason to go with a windows handheld. That and connecting with play anywhere games in the Xbox app.
I have a dual boot setup with the Deck, but its not a real smooth experience and requires a lot more hands on work to get it in decent shape.
Mario Wonder\ NSMB U, Rayman Origins and Legends.
The original lineup was kind of strange. The top model was $320 CAD more than the entry Deck and the difference is a $50 drive you can replace yourself.
That’s where they were eating costs. On the low end. Now the premium models add a lot for that higher price. It was pretty awesome to save so much on the 64gb model and it would be cool to have that option for the oled, but I think this way makes a lot more sense.
I run a lot of epic and gog games and would say Heroic is the best way. It took a little bit of time to learn the ins and outs, but I have pretty much every game I’ve tried working well.
Here’s my best tip for them. Steam installs proton versions for your steam games, Heroic will pick installed versions up and allow you to use them. First try proton and if it doesn’t work use wine. A wine-ge version can be installed through heroic. That will get 90% of your games to just work.
It has built in support for Epic,GOG, and Amazon. With those launchers you can access your library and fully manage your games. For other launchers there are other options. I actually use Heroic for EA, Ubisoft and Battlenet too, but the setup process is different. It’s a similar process to Installing a launcher inside of Steam. I find managing non-steam games better outside of steam.
Heroic has a built in add to steam feature that allows you to add any game to use in steam. This will work for game mode too. Every game will have its own prefix folder.
Theres no controller management built inside of heroic. Games have their own controller support. When added to steam they default to a generic game pad layout that should work as expected - and is fully customizable just like any Steam game.
Dolphin runs really well in my experience. Ive had no problem upscaling to 1080p. Pushing to 4k is too far but 1440p is doable with my limited testing.
If you install protontricks from the discover store it will list the folder id number for your installed games.
Proton prefix files are located in “home/deck/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/”
