Unfortunately we need to be careful what we wish for. As AI processing becomes more and more popular, if a card like the RTX 4070 had 20 GB vram they would probably all be snatched up by companies to use for AI processing on the cheap, and suddenly 4070 and higher all go for $2000 like the mining craze all over again.
I went from 5800x to 5800x3d and have zero regrets, I felt it was a significant upgrade.
What is the use case of this with a $599 initial crowdfunding price tag (and expected to be higher price at retail?)
Would it not make more sense just to buy a $600 more powerful laptop with a considerably stronger GPU?
Cache improves single threaded performance in gaming though.
About 7% additional maximum memory bandwidth - so if you were in a 100% memory bandwidth constrained situation that would be the maximum performance uplift. But being 100% memory bandwidth constrained is extremely rare so it’s probably a marginal improvement. But hey, any extra performance for free is a good thing.
I haven’t dipped my toes into DDR5 yet, did any of the sticks end up getting the rumored feature where they have multiple XMP/EXPO profiles or the option to save an additional one to the stick?
It would be really neat to be able to buy one with a 7600 CL36 and 6000 CL30 profile already on-board for ease of use with different CPUs. I’m familiar with setting everything up manually (on DDR4 at least) but for friends builds it’s nice to have the option to help them set a profile without doing it all manually.
It’s practical to use their existing test suite. It allows for comparison against other parts they have previously tested. Plus plenty of people are still playing games from the past 5 years.
In my experience Intel is generally best, but they all make duds, including Intel. I use a Qualcomm in my laptop at work and it’s very good.
Prometheus - The Fire Bringer 🔥 . Will the performance be “fire”, or will it run hot as fire? Or maybe if it’s the ‘c’ parts, the lower production costs and increased margins will be “fire” on AMDs balance sheet.
I know there’s always some “price is no object” buyers, but it’s weird to me when the motherboard is more than twice the price of the most expensive CPU that can go into it.
Really, think of all the incredibly expensive R&D, the amazing lithography technology, and the clean room production needed for a CPU.
Then compare that with what goes into laying some traces, installing some pre-made voltage regulators and ICs on a motherboard and basically buying a BIOS and tweaking it, then selling that board for more than twice the price of the CPU. That’s absurd to me.
Going from main system memory when the VRAM is full would probably still be orders of magnitude faster than going from any storage device. But maybe it will work out somehow with directstorage.
Well there’s still only a finite number of them being fabbed and manufactured. Whether they custom order them in bulk or not it still reduces available supply for other customers.
