  • FWIW, my 512GB OLED Deck arrived and seems flaweless for the most part. There’s a slight clicking when pressing down on the dpad that doesn’t exist when pressing left, right, or up but everything else (so far) seems 100%. No Dead Pixels (didn’t think there would be any since it’s using a Samsung display), and downloaded about 430GB worth of content to really test it out tonight.

    LE model as suspected couldn’t be cancelled and is also on the way. If I can catch the delivery driver I’m supposed to tell him to return to sender, else I have to get an RMA number and all that stuff to send back the inferior model. I wonder if new LE batchess will use the Samsung display (hopefully).

  • I just think someone at Vavle in marketing thought it would be a good idea to time this “themed” release with the new Half Life 1 refresh and convinced Gaben to do it. Vavle wouldn’t have been able to meet the demand at the “good” factory making the 512/1GB normal OLED models so they farmed out the manufacturing to someone else to handle the LE models as this LE plan was only only green lit a few months ago. This would also explain why you can still order the “Limited” edition model as they appear to be making them on order (after the initial lot was cleared out) and hence the 1-2 weeks timeframe (which is really 2 - 4 weeks since the first lot sold out).

  • The BOE screen at 90hz is running slightly faster than the Samsung model which may indicate the screen could be driven harder (overclock better?), but given the QC issues, I wouldn’t be so keep on get one. Both OLED screens suffer from PWM but that also mitigates a lot of the motion blur associated with the LCD displays. I’ve no doubt the PWM/flickering will be noticeable at lower refersh rates for sensitive people like myself, but I’d take some flicker over the atrocious LCD G2G response times (up to 10x slower during pixel transitions) on the OG deck or heck, any other LCD based handheld.

    ONCE I get my hands on both, I can perform the tests your’re asking about but I suspect you’ll find out the answer before I can compare them directly.

  • The LCD still has a few advantages (not many) over the OLED model. It is consierably less money and performs within 5% of the OLED. Battery life while not great is much better than the “competition” especially at lower wattage gaming (how these should be played). The outer shell (haven’t confirmed this 100% yet) on the new OLED model appears to be thinner/weaker likely to reduce overall weight (only 30G difference). So the durability of the LCD could be better. There’s also no worry about screen burn in or crazy mirror like reflections. The most recent 3.5.5 update incorporated many fixes making the “old” LCD models feel much snappier, and the LCD screen color has been fixed where it just looks good now, not amazing, but good! I’d also argue the audio is louder on the older LCD models even if a little less accurate sounding. Some prefer this (I do). If I want better precision I’ll wear headphones.

    tldr;

    If you don’t want to spend so much on the OLED, the LCD model is still a really good deal (compared to anything else in this price range especially). If you can afford the OLED model though, there’s enough improvements or enough of an argument to at least go with the 512GB model as you gain all the other stuff,
