I’d like to get this to save money but if it’s not worth it I’ll just get the 4080. I’m switching to pc and vr from console cause I’m tired of missing out. Also would like to use it with virtual desktop to stream movies etc.

Been using a 7900xt with a 7700x and it handles every game perfectly I’ve thrown at it on high settings in VR with an Oculus Quest 3.

    Don’t do VR.

Great for AAA games, has run everything I’ve tried on it.

I’ve had my XTX since Feb 2023.

In Linux, the 7900XTX just works in VR. I still haven’t much luck with the 4090.

I stopped playing Elite Dangerous on AMD due to a year of bad driver support. NVIDIA works.

AMD has a good card but I think the driver support is what’s holding it back.

No problems here with a xtx and hp reverb g2. Did have to use openxr because of optimization but after that has been great. Don’t really care for rtx especially in racing games. Throws me off

Before you make a decision on which you want to get, you should calculate the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for each. For TCO, you must account for the initial asking price of the models of GPUs you are considering, and the estimated operating costs, which is the function of the electricity price you pay (usually per KWh) and the amount of energy used in the card’s lifetime, approximated of course. With two similarly power-hungry cards, you can usually ignore this, but depending on which model of the 7900 XTX you are looking at, there could be as much as 200W of difference in average power consumption while gaming, between a 4080 and a 7900 XTX, and depending on your usage patterns and electricity costs, that can drive TCO up on the AMD card much faster than on the 4080. With the 4080 Super incoming at a rumored $1000 MSRP, choosing between the two might come down to the operational costs, so keep that in mind. One guy in the Netherlands was paying $0.44 per KWh and gaming 11 hours a day. In his case, even though the 4080 was more than 300 euros more expensive, the difference in operating costs led to the 4080 coming in overall less expensive in just one year of use than the 7900 XTX. Now, that is quite an extreme case, and TCO is a personalized metric, so I’m not saying that a 4080 is always the better choice, just that if you are considering costs, don’t forget about operating costs.

VR has largely improved for 7000 series since launch. There were launch issues where the 7900xtx was being outperformed by the 6950xt easily. This has been fixed and you’ll find that performance is very solid now. For general use, you’ll find that the 7900xtx is typically better in rasterization performance but loses out in RTX performance. If you don’t care about ray tracing or play titles where it doesn’t matter or would hinder the experience, then 7900xtx all the way. Otherwise the 4080 is your card.

Also of note is the RDNA3 can decode video larger than 4K which the earlier chips could not handle.
