Hello,

My deck will arrive tomorrow and while waiting I am just curious - is playing shooters on a deck comparable to playing shooters on a PS4? I mean controller wise, or is it harder on a handheld?

Plan to play a lot of Back4Blood and I was jist curious if it’s a good idea.

I haven’t played B4B or a PS4, but in general I have a way easier time playing FPS games on the deck than on other controllers because of the trackpads/gyro. It makes a huge difference.

Now, the small screen can definitely be a problem, but that is entirely dependent on what game you’re playing. Some shooters just don’t work well on a small screen.

I would go to protondb and see what other deck users have said about B4B on the small screen.

It’s pretty much the same as playing a shooter with a normal controller, better in ways, worse in others.

You’ve got four buttons on the rear of the Deck to map however you like, similar in functionality to paddles on a Scuf/Elite/Dualsense Edge.

You’ve also got the ability to use gyro, which absolutely is more accurate than a stick for aiming but I personally just don’t enjoy using it.

There’s the right trackpad as well that can be used as a native mouse input. Feels much smoother to use than a stick but there’s some major drawbacks. Firstly, not every game supports using mouse input and controller inputs simultaneously. Which means you either need to map all the controls to keyboard and mouse equivalents or use the trackpad to emulate a stick (which feels awful).

It’s also a tad too small for my liking, so I just use the right stick.

Ergonomically I find the Deck less comfortable than a PS4/Xbox controller, due the width and shape of it. It’s more comfortable than a Dualsense for me though.

Lastly, the screen. At only 7 inches, you’ll possibly find it a bit more difficult to spot enemies in shooters.
