pats her 2008 HP Laptop. It’s okay, buddy. You did the touch pad controls, first. Don’t let the new, faster technology make you quit now.

14 inch does not make sense to me as a form factor for a high performance machine. They always run too hot, like a 13 inch. You never get the full power of the machine because it can’t handle it.

14" is roughly the same size as the old 13" macbooks – that number is the viewable screen size diagonal measurement. The 2011 macbook for example just has a larger bezel around the screen.

I’ve owned/used several 13/14" macbooks and they never run hot unless I’ve managed to open several hundred tabs and neglected to reboot for over a week.

My current M1 14" almost always runs cool, even under stress, even while charging. Hearing the fan is so rare that it actually surprises me when it kicks on.

    It’s super fast!

Can I play a game on it? Well no.

Can I connect it to my 3d scanner? Well, no.

But if you want to use it for work it’s super fast!

The biggest problem is the price gouging on the ram upgrades. 8gb of ram on the base M3 macbook is an insult in 2023, and apple charges an additional 200$ per 8gb.

Yea that’s one of the reasons I’m still using the same 2011 iMac and 2013 macbook pro. They are still working just fine and I can’t justify upgrading yet because of the customization I will lose. It’s a shame, really. I will have to soon though bc I’m stuck on older OS with no official way to upgrade so I’m losing app support.

May I ask you more about this? I’m sure you definitely wrecked maxed out your ram, and probably upgraded your SSD once or twice, but did you also upgrade the CPU? I’m curious if that’s possible on the earlier models.

Before the move to Apple Silicon this could have been put down to Apple’s intransigence (although you could still upgrade the SSD on the Intel Macbooks), but with the additional integration of the M1 and now M2 and M3 then it’s the way it has to be in order to pull off what it does.

Yep, Apple is super anti-consumer that way. I can understand loving the ecosystem, but Apple sucks for soldering RAM on the board. Dell did a great job of making it pretty easy to access the RAM on their XPS laptops.

Have you not looked into asus, dell, some HP models, or any other laptops? For half the price of this machine you can get laptops which have better performance in all areas.

As for battery life. That depends entirely on what you are doing.

Office programs? Yes ten hours is doable. Gaming? Nope. Netflix? Maybe 5.

If you’d actually used both you would know that there’s just not comparable options with Windows laptops. It is what it is, maybe in the future that will change. You can get a faster Windows laptop OR one with comparable battery life, not both.

Also, a comparable XPS is about the same price as the MBP. Please show me the Windows laptop that’s faster at everything for half the price.

Apple’s memory being optimized and phones giving more SoT is due to the OS killing background tasks in every opportunity it gets. Like I was downloading Spotify playlist the other day. The moment I switched to a different app (didn’t even close the app), downloading stopped. It’s shit practice.

Gonna get downvoted for this. But never buy apple for their screwed up prices. For the same price you can get a laptop which outperforms this mac in all areas.

As long as you do some smart shopping.
