Can anyone give me some pros and cons of the Asus rog ally vs the steamdeck. From my limited knowledge of it, it seems like the Asus has better hardware, but it runs windows. So the steam os seems lighter weight and more efficient. I feel like steam os would also generally be better for the longevity of the system
Edit: also include legion go or any other handheld gaming pcs available on the market
It was a harder choice before the OLED came out. Now it’s a no brainer. Unless you’re a competitive online gamer, the Steamdeck OLED should be your choice. And, if you are a competitive online gamer, you should not be looking into a handheld.
So I’d look legion first, since the ROG has an SD melting issue that’s likely impossible to fix sans a design revision.
Steam OS is lighter, but it’s also using proton to play games, so not every game will work 100% of the time, launchers make things a mess, and games from other stores are a crapshoot. Longevity wise hard to say, but a modern windows box will play basically any old PC game ever with the right options, so I wouldn’t worry about Windows suddenly being outdated.
It’s more that Steam is a gaming focused OS, with some unique features, but for shear compatibility (or for anyone that wants to play something like Destiny) a Windows device has some obvious pluses.
The efficiency doesnt come from the os but from the soc. A steam deck running windows performs the same as a steamos one. And an ally running chimeraos (like steamos) will perform the same as a windows one. Source: I tried it.
The only thing thats really hindering low watt performance is the gpu of the ally not downclocking below 800mhz. There is no way the ally should use almost 3w for the gpu in games were the deck uses like 0.5w for the gpu and 3-4w total. But it seems nobody cares enough to fix it.
Other than that I wouldnt recommend the ally. Stick grind is real and after a couple hours the sticks will feel worse than the ones of cheap 1$ ps2 knockoff controllers. Also getting annoyed by constant updates, feels like every week either armoury crate, bios, myasus or windows wants to do some update that takes like 20 min. Which is horrible when you want to use it once a week for an hour or two. And yes you can ignore some. But for example latest armoury crate update simply wouldnt display any of my games until i installed it. Yes I could have started them directly through steam, but that kind of just postpones the issue.
Really the only good reason for the ally is plugged in 30w performance and vrr on the display.
