I have a SD with a 2 TB SSD upgrade working perfectly.

Situation/Question

I ordered a LE for myself for XMas with the intent of giving my 5 YO the LCD.

I want to open on Christmas Eve and give the LCD which my daughter already steals.

Wife says open and make sure that everything is working with “thorough testing” to be performed by yours truly.

What would you all do?

Open and test or leave sealed to XMas

She suggested I post this question.

I propose you give your wife the LCD over your kid. Especially if your kid is already borrowing it. A five year old just won’t make much use of it. I would recommend picking her up a PSP or something along those lines and let her start out with some of the classics and grow into the Deck, let her have one of them when a Deck 2 comes out.

That doesn’t really answer your question though, which I’m struggling to actually figure out that it is… Is it you are asking whether to use your deck and make sure it’s in working condition? Absolutely.ake full use of that 14 day window from delivery.

Honestly its a big monetary purchase - make sure it works. Run a controller test and see if the pixels all work. Then 1 big game on highest settings to see if your chip isn’t borked or something. Then just put it back again.

You don’t want to mess with your return window on the off chance something isn’t right. It’d really suck to A unpack a broken device at Xmas, and B not be able to return it.

I’m in a similar boat, except the OLED will be my first Deck. Technically it’ll be “my” Deck but realistically it’ll be for the family to use.

I plan to (carefully) open it when I receive it, spend an hour or two checking everything works as expected (with no kids present), then pack it back up as closely as I can to the original packaging and put it back under the tree for Xmas morning.

My spouse knows about it, but my kids do not, so I want them to be “surprised” as Xmas. They are unlikely to notice it was previously open
