I just bought a Steam Deck OLED for my 15 year old son for Christmas. Should I give it to him, in the box, on Christmas, or should I do anything ahead of time? Any massive updates to do ahead of time, or just let him figure it out? He is currently a PC gamer, and spends tons of money on Steam. Is it easy to transfer over those games? I guess I’m asking if I should try to load anything on it ahead of time or not.

I’m the type that likes the unboxing process and even try to buy things in undamaged boxes so he might have a preference in this regard.

He is currently a PC gamer, and spends tons of money on Steam.

In this case, he’ll probably want to do all the setup himself. If he had no steam account and no games I might suggest getting it setup for him, but in this case he’ll certainly know what he’s doing in a general sense and want to personalize it to suit his tastes.

Definitely let him do it! Most of the fun is unboxing and setting everything up
