Hi gang, i am looking for a laptop that can last a long period of time, at least 5-10 years. I prefer to invest in stuff that lasts long and still performs pretty well even if i have to pay more rather than buy a new cheaper one every 3 years. I also don’t have much knowledge on laptops, so i would be very thankful for some recommendations. I would probably use it for casual gaming (lol, cs go) not something too big or demanding and photo editing. I am a librarian so please don’t recommend 5000€ laptops, they’re more expensive than my car.

Honestly depends on the use case, if you’re looking to just use it for some basic web browsing and Microsoft Office you could get by pretty well with an older laptop and just upgrade the RAM and ssd, if you’re looking to also do some more intensive tasks likely photo editing and some light gaming an Acer aspire 5 https://store.acer.com/en-au/acer-aspire-5-windows-11-home-intel-core-i5-11th-gen-8gb-ram-256gb-ssd1 this would do just fine

Any laptop that you do maintenance on every 6-12 months. You may not get good life time with Windows, but Linux will keep it running for even 20 years. Some say HP sucks. Keep that in mind

Get yourself a thinkpad, not the absolute slim ones but the ones which are repairable. Parts are going to go bad in 10 years but switching them out will be easy. You may need to change batteries 2-3 times depending on use.

5-10 years is a huge range. My first Lenovo that I bought in 2010 still works, slow, but works. Similarly, the laptop I bought in 2017 also works.

I would suggest not buying i7 or anything on the very high-end of CPU, as they’ll produce more heat and may not survive that long.

And take everyone’s suggestions with a grain of salt, as it’s electronics and it may die out earlier than expected. I have had laptops die on me in 3 years for no specific reason.

Most of my laptops that does not last more than 2 to 4 years are those with cheap plastic casings. The first thing that will give-out were the hinges, plastic mounts for the hinge screws will break even with normal usage of opening/closing the laptop screen. If you want to buy a laptop that lasts, buy the ones with metal A (display shell), C (top case which houses the keyboard, palmrest, touchpad, etc.) panels. This means that a macbook or any Windows laptop line that have magnesium or aluminum builds.
