Just thinking about the position of some console companies is rooted on closed eviroments and exclusives like, for example, if nintendo published their games on other platforms probably steam deck would replace it right away (IMO) do you think it would also affect companies like play station or xbox?
If we’re talking handhelds then yes, but consoles are still more powerful and not everyone is into handheld gaming. It would definitely outdo the switch because the only thing switch would have is it’s detachable controllers and motion controls.
And a significantly more user-friendly experience. Steam Deck is great, but it is not something I’d just hand someone with little knowledge of a computer/gaming.
Probably not you’re forgetting the main reason people buy consoles ease of use. Not everyone wants to tinker with their games. Not to mention the value of the box itself you can’t build a PC that is comparable to a PS5 for the same price. Even the Switch it’s not just exclusives some people don’t want to fuss with getting a game to work they just want to buy it and play it even if it looks like the equivalent to smearing Vaseline on your screen. The Switch is also vastly more portable and lightweight than the SD which many consumers prefer. I have a coworker who saw me playing my SD at my desk once and ask what it was I let them see it and play it, they thought it was cool but ultimately wouldn’t get one because they thought it was too big and too heavy.
Look let me preface this by say I love my Deck it’s been one of my favourite purchases in a long time but it’s a niche device. It’s sold multiple millions yes but the Switch has sold hundreds of millions, the PS5 40+ million and hell even Xbox Series has sold somewhere like 20 million. Those devices have 2 years or more on the SD but in 2 years or even going by the Switch 6 years there’s little chance the SD breaks those kinds of numbers. To be clear I am quite confident that both its consumers and Valve consider the SD a rousing success and I think it’ll hopefully have a long fruitful product line. It’s just to say taking away exclusives wouldn’t erase the competition nor would you want it to competition is always good.
No. Because it is not a console to begin with
I believe it would do the exact opposite. Exclusivity is the opposite of competition. A company monopolizes content by only allowing it to be hosted on its own platform. In a sense, yes, Nintendo holds a monopoly on Mario games, Zelda games, etc. If there were no such thing as a console-exclusive game, other console makers and especially Nintendo would be forced to compete in other ways should they want to continue existing. This could mean making competing hardware (eg. better value, better features, more powerful, etc), making a better storefront, and of course, making better games.
Also, it’s worth mentioning that despite having a far, far larger library of games, the Deck is still an extremely niche system, and definitely not the market-destroying monster that many here wish it is. The Switch has sold over 40 times more units than the Deck if we’re being generous to Valve. Even the PS Vita, widely regarded as a failure of a handheld, sold 5 times more units than the Deck. Nintendo and Sony are much more familiar household names than Valve, and they market themselves far more aggressively. Should Nintendo release another handheld while also forgoing any exclusive games, I guarantee that it would still sell far better than the Deck.
