so i set up my framework 13th gen with fedora and did what the guide says
for some reason i just did a youtube video test and the battery only lasted 5 hours just playing a youtube video. I thought normal laptop usage is like 7+ ?

Is hardware video acceleration enabled? Without it, video decoding is not that trivial a job and can consume more power than one would expect. If you are using Firefox, you can see if you are using acceleration by going to about:support and checking the video decoding table after playing a video. If you are using the Fedora build (not the Flatpak package) you can follow this guide

Yup normal…even with hardware acceleration on in the browser you might get into the 6.5-7 hours range. Outside of using youtube extensively, zoom, or other video intensive tasks, I tend to get between 10-11 hours of use. This is on an i7-1260p. If you need longer life carry a portable power cell, or upgrade to the new AMD board. If you want to stick with Intel I would probably wait another 18months and move to a 15th gen board.

I’m actually so glad I canceled my pre-order on the fw 16. I’ve got a Lenovo Yoga and it easily does over 10 hours a day, PLUS I can write on it. I still love the idea of a framework though, let’s see where they go with it and if it ever becomes affordable.

Good thing is that they’ll start selling the AMD mainboard eventually and then you can just swap that in. 😎 Oh and 61wh battery is out.

I have fedora (Kde spin) and get easily more than 5h out of it… I followed this guide mostly but stayed with the normal power-profile-daemon, not tlp. In battery saver mode I might be able to get 8h, but only with all non USB c modules removed and low screen brightness.

I’m also on Fedora; make sure to follow the setup guide completely. There are a few commands it gives you that might improve battery life. Also, I was able to shave a few watts off of my 12th gen’s idle power draw by setting the display to 48hz instead of 60. Be aware that your IO modules also use power, with the storage, Ethernet, and video output modules being the most demanding. If you aren’t using any of those very frequently, consider swapping it out for a USB port. I run 2 of each USB port with HDMI and Ethernet modules stored in my backpack in case I need them.
