Is 8 gigs of ram really that bad? Priced at $2099 CAD. I want to get it but I’ve come across a crap ton of threads saying 8 gigs of ram for a “pro model” is not enough. I’m a light user, will only use it for university, no coding, no video editing, just general use. But then again we go back to the whole situation, is 8 gigs really not enough for this workload? The main selling point for me is the better display over the 15” Air which I was also thinking about and the thing is, they offer 8 gigs of ram for that one too… Which one should I pick? (Coming from a windows user)

8gbs of ram on Mac are okay, you may not be able to run 2 VM at the same time while compiling Xcode But I can open 10 apps and none of them crashes with 8gb of ram , even an app emulated via rosetta2. I will never get 8gbs of ram again but, it’s not so bad as it seem

If you’re just doing general use, you really don’t need a Pro. The new 14" base model MacBook Pro is probably the worst value for money. There’s no reason that any laptop costing over $2000 CAD should come with 8 gigs of ram.

If you’re a light user, get the Air. There’s a reason Apple compared the M3 to the M1 in their keynote, that’s bc it’s not a really big improvement over the M2. You’ll be saving $600 if you go with the M2 Air.

Summarized all points made by very helpful users so far in this thread:

    • $2099 is a robbery
    • 8 gigs is enough for basic use
    • holy shit my m1 with 8 gigs doing casul web browsing is freezing up my device
    • go with the m2 air for a cheaper option

    Thanks for the help ya’ll!
