I’m confused by some people who got the deck, they clearly prefer to fellatio Nintendo and praise far less generally capable systems.

Is the deck perfect? No way, but offline mode has been with steam for like a decade or more - its not news.

When get ready to fly, I check that my bags are packed, my phone is charged and that my entertainment works. If I get to boarding and see my phone is at 25% I don’t blame Samsung/Apple/Android for my lack of prep work.

I have both Switch and Steam Deck and I love both. But I’m also not a partisan: both have things to improve. The Steam Deck is just a first generation device: it’s not perfect and it’s normal and expected users will have valid criticisms. This helps things improve over time.

I really don’t want the Steam Deck to be the same in, say, 3 or 4 generations from now.

How does that work exactly? I mean, I have deactivated my wifi and I logged off of my account and after a reboot, I just can go into my account in offline mode. I will eventually use my steam deck off wifi for sure and I want to know what could eventually happen. Thinking about dual booting Batocera and ditching Emudeck so I can still play my retro games if I get locked out of SteamOS.

I’ll assume you don’t have your password memorized, meaning you have a decent password. But not all is lost.

Do you have the Steam app on your phone? You should, since that’s how they do 2-Factor authentication, which you very much should be using to secure your account.

    1. Open the Steam app on your phone.

    2. Touch the bottom right (the 3 bars).

    3. Touch “Steam Guard”.

    4. See the barcode-like square (QR code) on your deck’s screen? Move your phone’s camera over that.

It will verify on your app that you want to sign it in. Do so.

The common wisdom is that you update, go offline mode, and test a few games before leaving home to avoid things like this.

The common wisdom is that, Valve needs to do something about this shit already.
Store the offline authentication token thingy on the sd system encrypted and whatnot. No need to check for updates every time you power the deck or wake it up. Or when you isp decides to switch your ip to a whole different country (I love in Iraq, they do this frequently on a randomly times and fucks up the whole log in for many sites).

I do this with my ROG to make sure all my games are sync’d to the Steam/Epic/Gamepass cloud. Its annoying but worth it for when I’m on the plane.

Ran into similar issues several times on flights - sometimes I just grab the switch, cause it’s much less of a hassle.

This shouldn’t be necessary and still doesn’t ensure you’ll be ok the next day. I’ve done all the shit outlined in this thread and still got fucked on a plane (and not in a good way)

I don’t want to have to troubleshoot and baby my gaming experiences and devices all the time. This just shouldn’t happen.

Ah another post of user error, someone trying to blame valve when the user didn’t follow directions.

I’ll keep taking mine on long trips and playing flawlessly.

I love the development team for steam os but this and verifying installation are such bullshit on a handheld device.

This is the one thing I hate about my SD. The amount of times I’ve jumped on a bus only for it to tell me it needs to extract some update or something. Never happens with the switch.

This is exactly why I was sending my friend every article and post I could find before he took his new steam deck on a trip to Japan. Didn’t want him SOL in the air.

And yeah, it should be changed by Valve, but until then we must be vigilant.
