i have heard this before and i’m curious what you guys think, if you have any anecdotal experience. i have heard, and this makes some sense to me, that because it is a separate piece of glass that can be easily peeled off of the screen and it is not laminated to anything for more strength, that glass screen protectors are inherently much easier to crack and shatter than a bare screen, or a screen with a thin TPU film screen protector. this gives people the impression with how often phones get dropped and how often glass screen protectors break, that most or all of those drops would have damaged their screen if they didn’t have a glass screen protector.

ever since i got my first smartphone, which was a galaxy S5 when it was new, i have only used glass screen protectors, but i am now trying out TPU for the first time, and how thin they are makes me nervous that i’m going to drop my s22 ultra and destroy the screen and regret it. am i worrying myself for nothing? i know that phone screens are definitely not indestructible. many bare phone screens have been broken from drops even if they were in a case.

you might as well ignore me as im not really knowledgeable here but i think the actual screen should be stronger than a screen protector, so not every single crack on the protector would’ve been a crack on the screen, but an impact strong enough to crack the screen will instead be absorbed by the screen protector.

at least that’s what i think

The main purpose is to protect from scratches. Watch mrwhostheboss video on screen protectors.

I don’t apply any glass protectors on my phone but I do invest in a good case. Imo, the default screen is much more durable than any after market glass protectors

Not really. Glass is glass is glass. Regardless of ceramic shield or gorilla glass victus. It all scratches the same. A glass screen protector is a sacrificial piece. It takes the scratches that 100% still would scratch your phone screen. If the thing scratching the screen protector is hard enough to scratch it would scratch your screen.

it’s a sacrificial piece, it’s supposed to crack instead of letting the original glass panel break. Consider a piece of armor that’s so indestructible, the guy inside it turns into mush, completely destroyed by the impact while the armor container prevents all the guts and blood from spilling out. What’s the point, the armor destroys the very thing it’s supposed to protect.

      It’s like cars.

Cars of old were tough and harder to dent, hence the force is directly transmitted to the passengers who turn into mush.

Cars today are easier to dent because they are specifically designed to absorb the impact and damage (crumple zones) so it won’t be transmitted to the passengers. The force is dispersed through the body of the car.

Never used screen protector, just slim protector case that will not allow screen damage from drops. Never had a scratched screen…

They protect against scratches. Anecdotal evidence from 8+ „Panzerglas“ I have already applied to the phone of my teenage daughter, they also seem to take the brunt out of falling on the floor. She usually has her protector crashed within days after getting a fresh one, but her Screen glas is A-OK. But she has always gone lucky with that, it‘s designed do to anti-scratch!

A glass screen protector is a sacrificial piece. In an impact it will take the damage and crack. In day to day usage it will scratch instead of your screen. Glass is glass is glass. Ceramic shield, gorilla glass victus ++, super ultra cool fun time, ECT… it’s all glass. It all scratches at level 6 and deeper grooves at level 7 (thanks Jerryrigeverything). A glass screen protector is meant to feel premium and not plasticy like a plastic screen protector.

Not going to lie, the TPU one that is on my phone and now feels almost as premium as glass. In fact, under my thumb, it feels the same, It feels slick like glass. It only feels plasticy or rubbery if I try to drag my fingernail across it. I’ve only done this gently, as I don’t want to intentionally scratch or gouge it.

I use them to protect from scratches but it also gives me piece of mind against the screen cracking. I used amfilm screen protectors on many of my devices before and they’ve worked great but honestly just having one will help which is good for trade in value.
